Device explodes in Ballyfermot

Improvised explosive device exploded beneath a car in the early hours of this morning. Army bomb disposal team had earlier been called to a weapons find in Leitrim.

A DEVICE PLACED UNDER a car in Ballyfermot, Co Dublin, exploded in the early hours of this morning, causing serious damage to the car.

No injuries were reported.

The Defence Forces said they were called to the scene at around 4.40am, after the Improvised Explosive Device had exploded.

The bomb disposal team carried out a post-blast analysis and declared the scene safe at 7am. A garda investigation into the incident is underway.

Grenade launcher in Leitrim

The army team had been called out to a field off Railway Road, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, earlier in the night, after an improvised grenade launcher and ammunition were found.

These were made safe and handed over to gardaí, although the bomb disposal team took some samples of a black power and a detonator from the scene for further analysis.

That scene was declared safe shortly after midnight.
