SMALL BUSINESSES AND community groups in Donegal will be able to avail of temporary humanitarian assistance in the wake of last week’s flooding.

The Irish Red Cross said that it was administering two temporary emergency support schemes at the request of the government.

Torrential weather last week affected tens of families, after a month’s rain fell in just a few hours. People were displaced from their homes and farms, while roads and bridges were badly damaged.

Over 60 families have received financial assistance since the flash flooding, with 40 more receiving help in securing emergency accommodation.

The two schemes being organised by the Red Cross have to do with small businesses as well as community, voluntary and sporting bodies.

The first scheme provides temporary emergency humanitarian support to small businesses that have been unable to secure flood insurance and have been flooded following storms in August 2017.

The scheme will give a support contribution towards to cost of repairing businesses to their pre-flood condition. This includes the replacement of flooring, fixtures and fittings and damaged stock.

The scheme is targeted at small businesses of up to 20 employees.

Community groups

The second scheme will give support to community, voluntary and sporting bodies affected by the flooding.

It will cover damage to buildings, contents or fixture and fittings following the storms. It will not apply to loss of earnings or of business goodwill or for damage caused to fairways or sports grounds or pitches.

The closing date for receipt of applications for both schemes is the 30th September 2017.
