Irishman jailed over Perth car crash that killed two Irish backpackers

Eamonn Driver was sentenced to almost three years in prison for the crash that killed Colm Reilly and Kiara Duncan.

AN IRISHMAN EXTRADITED to Australia over a car crash that killed an Irish man and an Irish woman in Perth has been sentenced to almost three years in jail.

ABC News reports that Eamonn Driver from Slane in Co. Meath was behind the wheel of a small hatchback when it careered across the road and flipped onto its roof and collided with another car.

Two Irish backpackers,  Colm Reilly from Slane and Kiara Duncan from Kentstown Co. Meath, were passengers in the car and died in the accident. They were 20-years-old and 22-years-old respectively.

A 63-year-old woman who was driving the other car escaped without serious injury.

Driver returned to Ireland before he was charged but Minister for Justice Alan Shatter granted his extradition and Driver was brought back to Australia.

In August of last year, Driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of the two Irish nationals.

ABC report that Driver had six passengers in the car he was driving when it crashed and that he had been drinking beforehand.

He was sentenced to two years and 50 weeks in prison and will be eligible for parole after serving half his sentence.
