THINGS WE LEARNED

#SHOOTING Four men arrested over the shooting dead of Peter Butterly (35) in the car park of the Huntsman pub in Gormanston, Co Meath, remain in custody. Gardaí said today that one of the men was released this afternoon. It is thought Butterly’s death may be linked to an internal Real IRA feud.

#POPE The conclave of Catholic cardinals will meet next Tuesday to begin the process of deciding who will be the next pope of the Roman Catholic Church, following Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation. They wished to hold the conclave earlier than usual, and voted on the issue following days of meetings.

#NICOLA FURLONG The father of Nicola Furlong, the Irish woman who died in Japan last year, has spoken about the murder trial. Andrew Furlong said that the family had been “coping better than expected” but the trial has been “hard listening”.

#BAILOUT IMF managing director Christine Lagarde has said that the fund has an “open mind” about the possibility of delaying the repayment of Ireland’s IMF bailout loans. She made the comment while speaking in Dublin today, where she also spoke of the “extraordinary efforts” made by Ireland to rebuild its economy.

#ABORTION The draft legislation to allow abortion within the terms of the X Case will be published by the Irish Government next month, and it hopes to have the legislation in place by July. A timetable on this was presented by Irish representatives at a Council of Europe meeting today in Strasbourg.

In Mother Hubbard’s Child Care in Ongar Village Dublin for Early Childhood Ireland’s National Pyjama Day were: Patrick Glackin (4), Kate Ayres (4), Sarah Aberg (4), and James Van Der Mesch (4).  They were among 43,762 young people nationwide wearing their PJs to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation’s Hospice Home Care for Children programme.
