A MAN HAS died after sustaining serious injuries on a fishing trawler off the coast of Kinsale, Co Cork yesterday evening.
The Coartmacsherry All Weather RNLI Lifeboat was called to go to the aid of the trawler at about 7.40pm last night.
Both the Coastguard Helicopters from Shannon and Waterford were scrambled as well and a major rescue plan was tasked.
The Waterford Coastguard Helicopter succeeded in air lifting the casualty from the trawler and the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat put two of its crew on board the trawler and brought it back to Kinsale Harbour.
There were three crew on board the trawler when the accident happened as they were fishing in the area and it is believed the accident involved the trawling wires aboard the vessel.
The man’s injuries were severe and he was transferred to hospital by helicopter. It is believed that he did not survive. The RNLI said the other crew of the trawler were “shocked and traumatised” as they arrived into Kinsale this morning under the guidance of the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat crew.
