Irish woman hospitalised after random attack in France

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is ready to give assistance.

Updated 7.45pm

A 25-YEAR-OLD Irish woman was hospitalised after an apparently random attack in the French town of Avignon.

The woman was attacked by three men outside her apartment at 6.30am on Saturday morning, local website Le Dauphiné reports. The woman was brought to hospital for treatment, and RTÉ says that she has since been released.

One of the men was armed with a chain, Le Dauphiné says. They hit the woman in the head before fleeing the scene. Avignon is a popular summer tourist destination, attracting thousands every year.

“She is in shock,” a police source told the Le Dauphiné.

The woman will be interviewed when she has recovered, but it is not believed her injuries are serious.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is ready to give assistance.
