Garda Ombudsman investigating death of man in Galway

The man was taken from the River Corrib at around 7.20pm this evening.

THE GARDA OMBUDSMAN Commission has sent its investigators to look into the death of a man in Galway this evening.

The man had been pulled from the River Corrib near the Galway docks at 7.2opm and brought to Galway University Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7.50pm.

The case was referred by gardaí to the Garda Ombudsman Commission under section 102 of the 2005 Garda Síochána Act.

Under this section, the Ombudsman Commision can be referred to “any matter that appears to the Garda Commissioner to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person”.

It is believed the man had been stopped at a garda checkpoint earlier this evening.
