Councillor called a 'racist c***' over stance on Traveller accommodation

Josepha Madigan has received online abuse over her comments.

A FINE GAEL councillor has been called a “racist c***” over comments she made about Traveller accommodation.

In 2014, Josepha Madigan released a newsletter which stated that building Traveller accommodation on a number of sites in south Dublin would be “a waste of valuable resources” given the worth of the land.

The leaflet was highlighted recently following the death of ten Travellers in the fire tragedy in Carrickmines.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent yesterday, Madigan stood by the newsletter and denied it was anti-Traveller.

She said the proposal to build in the locations selected didn’t make financial sense.

Madigan told the newspaper: ”This is land that now is worth about €7 million or €8 million and what the council was proposing to do was to house four families in that site. My only point was from an economic perspective, not anti-Traveller.”

Following the interview she received abuse online, with one commenter calling her a “racist c***’ and threatening her and her family:

Madigan is running for Fine Gael in the Dublin-Rathdown constituency alongside former minister Alan Shatter.
