1000 CANDLES WERE lit at a silent vigil held for murdered Irish student Karen Buckley in Glasgow this evening.
The event, entitled ‘Silent Vigil For Our Neighbour Karen Buckley’ took place at 7pm and was organised by residents of the Garnethill area of Glasgow, where the 24-year-old lived with her friends.
The BBC reported that the organisers hoped to light hundreds of candles during the vigil.
It added that Karen Buckley’s flat was very near the park where the vigil was held.
The event was seen as an opportunity for the locals in Garnethill to remember their neighbour after her tragic death.
It is believed around 150 people attended this evening’s vigil.
Tweets from the vigil show a spiral of candles being lit by people as floral tributes were donated by locals.
Yesterday’s vigil
Around 1,000 people gathered yesterday evening to hold a vigil for the young student in the city’s George Square – including her parents, Marian and John.
The nurse was reported missing by her friends following a night out at a club near their flat last Saturday, sparking a major police search.
Her body was found at a farm to the north of the city overnight on Wednesday.
A 21-year-old man, Alexander Pacteau, appeared in court in Glasgow yesterday charged with her murder.
Flowers and other tributes have also been left at Glasgow Caledonian University, where she was studying, and at the farm where her body was found.
