SENIOR GARDAÍ HAVE said they are confident that those who killed Michael Keogh on Dorset Street yesterday will be caught.
Keogh, an associate of the Kinahan cartel, was shot a number of times as he sat in his car on Sheridan Court in the north inner city yesterday morning.
Gardaí believe he was targeted for a number of reasons including his links to the suspected killer of Gareth Hutch. He had also been accused of intimidating innocent members of the Hutch family in the weeks prior to his murder.
Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll said that while Keogh’s gangland murder was the first of its kind of this year, gardaí believe they have the necessary tools to arrest his killer.
Speaking on RTE Radio One this afternoon, O’Driscoll said that while this latest murder was “regrettable”, gardaí have been working around the clock since the Regency Hotel murder in February 2016.
“There has been continuous intervention where there have been attempts to murder… it is just regrettable on this occasion that we didn’t get there first.
“While it is regrettable that we have had this, the first gangland murder in Dublin this year, the investigation team based in Mountjoy and those assisting from around the Dublin Metropolitan Region have built up a level of experience.
Based on what I am aware of, I am satisfied that we will have a successful outcome in terms of identifying the culprits and bringing them to justice in this case.
O’Driscoll added that he was confident gardaí had stopped at least 20 murders in the capital. However, he would not be drawn on how many people are currently at risk.
“At times, firearms that we have seized have been loaded for attempted assassinations. We have seized sub-machine guns, assault rifles and arrested people who were about to commit a murder.
“I would be absolutely certain that it is in excess of 20.”
