Liam Adams found guilty of rape and sexual abuse

A jury voted 11-1 to find the brother of Gerry Adams guilty to raping and abusing his then four-year-old daughter.

THE BROTHER OF Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has been found guilty of raping and sexually abusing his eldest daughter more than 30 years ago.

Liam Adams, who is 58 and from Belfast, denied all 10 charges against him.

However, a jury of nine men and three women reached a majority verdict of 11-1 today on three counts of rape, three counts of gross indecency and four counts of indecent assault.

The abuse was alleged to have taken place between 1977 and 1983.

His daughter Áine Adams waived her right to anonymity. She said that she had made a complaint some years ago, but police officers were more interested in her uncle.

Adams was remanded in custody for four weeks to await sentencing.
