EU COMMISSIONER Máire Geoghegan-Quinn has announced the biggest ever fund for research and development. The €6.4 billion fund will cover projects ranging from science to public policy and will support some 16,000 researchers.

Proposals for projects seeking grants will be received by the Commission over the next 14 months, and the call for submissions will be posted here tomorrow.

Ms Geoghegan-Quinn’s office said this package is “an economic stimulus expected to create more than 165,000 jobs.” The funding is part of the EU’s “Europe 2020 Strategy” which aims to increase investment in sustainable growth. The main focus of this research fund is converting lab research into jobs.
