Man charged with murder of Aoife Phelan

Robert Corbet, 24, appeared before a special court sitting this morning.

A PORTLAOISE LOCAL, Robert Corbet, has been charged with the murder of Aoife Phelan, RTÉ News reports.

The 24-year-old appeared in court this morning to hear the charges and was then taken to Cloverhill Prison where he will remain in custody until the next hearing on 15 November.

The suspect was arrested last night by police investigating the death of the 30-year-old au pair who had been missing since 25 October. She was four months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

According to the Laois Nationalist, the court heard that Corbet shook his head and said “no” when he was detained by Gardaí.

Small crowds gathered outside the courtoom ahead of the hearing and remained there until he garda escort drove away.

Aoife’s funeral is due to take place tomorrow afternoon at St Patrick’s Church in Ballyroan.
