The party leaders are wearing out the shoeleather as canvassing hits a climax – racking up almost 1,300km between them.

THE LEADERS OF the five main political parties are wearing out the shoeleather today as the election campaign enters the home stretch – with four of the five party leaders spending the day crossing the country.

Micheal Martin, Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore have been particularly busy, zipping between provinces in the last dash to receive as many first preferences as they possibly can – and Martin comes out the leader in the mileage stakes, as our gallery below shows.
