New Volkswagen Polo unveiled - and the GTI is (hopefully) on its way too

You’ll be able to hop behind the wheel of a new Polo later this year.

THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN Polo has been unveiled with a grown-up image that makes it look very much like a junior Golf. It’s larger size and range of new safety features should see it earning class honours once again.

On the practical side, the Polo gets a more expansive boot with 351 litres of space (up from 280 litres). A stretch in wheelbase makes the cabin feel roomier, while up front is a nifty customisable all-digital dashboard, available with a choice of infotainment systems, including an eight-inch touchscreen unit.

Buyers will be able to choose from a range of different engines: a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine, a punchier 150hp 1.5-litre engine, or 1.6-litre diesel option with either 80- or 90hp.

If that news still hasn’t quite satisfied your fast-driving craving, rumour has it that the new Polo GTI will also be coming to Ireland, with a 200hp 2.0-litre TSI engine lurking under its bonnet. It will ride on 17-inch wheels as standard, with the option of larger 18-inch rims.

Other features will include a Sport Select option that enables adjustable damping, but for now, Volkswagen is remaining tight-lipped on the subject of performance figures.

The new Volkswagen Polo is due to arrive in Irish showrooms in November, following its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. Pricing and exact specifications will be confirmed closer to this time, with the bulk of sales expected to begin for January’s 181 registration period.
