Poll: Do you agree that the State pension should be cut?

As more people get older, the Government have concerns about increasing expenditure.

CUTTING THE BASIC rates of the State pension might be considered by Government, according to reports in The Irish Times this morning.

Officials from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform have carried out a review and have strong concerns about the overall sustainability of the State pension and future expenditure levels.

Ageing population 

It’s suggested that due to demographic pressures, expenditure could increase by €195 million a year in the medium term, and that a reduction of €1 to the contributory and non-contributory pension could bring about substantial savings.
