YOU MAY HAVE seen a letter circulating on social media, addressed to Sky TV customers, telling them to “arrange repayment of a credit balance on your account.”
It’s been labelled a scam, and shared tens of thousands of times on Facebook.
The only thing is, it’s real.
This example of the letter was posted to Facebook, with this message:
I checked the number on Google and it is a scam. If you get this letter don’t ring the number. IT WILL COST YOU.
However, TheJournal.ie has checked it out with Sky, who have confirmed it is the real deal.
The confusion derives from the fact that in some cases a template for UK customers was mistakenly used, instead of an Irish one.
A spokesperson for the company told us:
The letter that this customer received is a genuine letter from Sky, as part of a process where we are contacting customers who have cancelled their Sky account with a positive balance on their account remaining.
These letters advise customers to call us to claim a refund. However, in a small number of cases, the letter incorrectly referred to £ instead of € and directed customers to a UK number.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and encourage any customers who received the letter to call the free phone number 1800-927-493 to avail of their refund.
So if you, or someone you know, got one of these things – don’t throw it out.
You might be missing out on a little unexpected Christmas bonus.
The Sky spokesperson also told TheJournal.ie that if you’re ever unsure about a letter or email from them, call the customer service number on 0818-719-819 to check it out.
