SONY HAS SAID it will resume some services on its PlayStation Network which had to be shut down following the theft of the the personal details of about 77 million users.
Sony said today that it had boosted the security of their computers and apologised for the security breach after user names, email addresses and log in details were stolen, BBC News reports.
On 20 April, users of the PlayStation network, which allows gamers to play with people online as well as download software, could not access the service after which it emerged that Sony had shut the system down whilst it investigated an “external intrusion” or hacking.
The full extent of the breach did not become apparent until earlier this week when millions of users were warned that their credit card details could potentially have been stolen.
Sony said today that it could not rule out the possibility that 10 million users may have had their credit card information stolen but said there was no evidence that this had happened and adding that the information is encrypted, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Today, Sony said that parts of the network will be back online this week but it will take until the end of the month for a full reboot of the network, reports the New York Times.
The theft has prompted some legal action and an investigation by a US congressional committee as well as other European bodies.
