Teen who raised more than £3 million for cancer charity dies

Stephen Sutton’s mother said today she was “bursting with pride but breaking with pain”.

STEPHEN SUTTON, WHO raised more than £3 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust, has died, his family confirmed today.

Reports yesterday said the 19-year-old cancer patient’s health had deteriorated so much that he could no longer communicate. Today, the mother of the inspirational young man, posted a poignant message on Facebook in which she said her heart was “bursting with pride but breaking with pain”.

She said he pased away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning.

“The ongoing support and outpouring of love for Stephen will help greatly at this difficult time, in the same way as it helped Stephen throughout his journey,” she added. “We all know he will never be forgotten, his spirit will live on, in all that he achieved and shared with so many.”

In April, Sutton had posted this photo, with a farewell message for his friends and supporters, which went viral:

One week later, he said he had genuinely thought he was “a goner” but had fought on.

“I feel very fortunate to be here, and every second alive feels very special!!” he told his followers, again encouraging them to donate to the cancer charity.

Just a few weeks ago, he released this video which shows how much he went through with his illness and how he managed to continue being positive, despite the obstacles he faced.

He set up a bucket list on Facebook which included things like skydiving, crowd surfing in a rubber dingy, drumming in front of a live crowd and getting a tattoo – all of which he did before he died.

It got so much attention he decided to use his popularity to raise money for teens with cancer and the total reached more than £3.2 million.
