Irish people sent over 2.4 billion texts between April and June

A report from ComReg also found that more than three quarters of mobile calls were to another mobile.

IRISH PEOPLE SENT over 2.4 billion text messages between April and June, according a report from communications regulator ComReg.

This figure is down 22.3 per cent on the same period in 2012 but with the increasing popularity of messaging services like Whatsapp, that’s not to say our fingers were any less busy in the second quarter of 2013.

The number of multimedia messages was also down compared to the same period last year. Comreg said some of these changes may be reflective of seasonal activity like peaks during the holiday period and a decline in summer months.

Total mobile retail traffic totalled 2.73 billion minutes during the period – an increase of 3.4 per cent on the previous quarter. Landlines were feeling lonely in the second quarter of the year with 76.7 per cent of all mobile voice calls classified as mobile-to-mobile.

Mobile retail revenues for Q2 were over €391 million with the average monthly revenue per user at just over €27 per month. This is down both on the previous quarter and the same period last year which ComReg said is a reflection of factors such as worsened economic conditions, lower priced mobile plans, increased sales of bundled products and reductions in roaming and mobile termination rates.
