1. #BUS ÉIREANN: The industrial action undertaken by Bus Éireann staff over the last couple of days has cost €500,000 already, company spokesperson Andrew McLindon told RTÉ this morning. The strike has been suspended for 48 hours and management representatives are due to meet with the union over the next two days in the hope of reaching a conclusion to the dispute.
2. #CORK: The body of a man was found at an apartment complex on North Main Street in Cork city yesterday evening. Gardaí said today they are “investigating all possibilities” and the state pathologist is due to carry out a post mortem examination today.
3. #CATHOLIC CHURCH: An Irish priest is being sued in the US for the alleged rape of a Californian woman in 1970, TheJournal.ie can reveal. The priest, who is believed to be about 80 years old and living in Dublin, was visiting the diocese of Fresno when the alleged incident occurred, just days after the woman’s father had died.
4. #RECESSION: A new report from the ESRI has shown that the impact of the recession was significantly greater on younger households as unemployment rates are higher and they are more likely to be in negative equity. The report notes that these households have dramatically decreased their expenditure since 2010 compared to those over 45-years-old.
5. #CROKE PARK 2: Following a number of labour relations meetings with unions and representative groups, Minister Brendan Howlin will today brief the Cabinet on the progress made. Plans to delay increments to workers on over €65,000 – which were due to be frozen for three years – have been changed and extended working weeks will be delayed under the new deal.
6. #BANKING UNION: EU finance ministers are meeting in Brussels today to begin negotiations on a banking union. The main issue for the talks will be how to handle the winding up of failing banks, with Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan hoping to settle on a hierarchy of creditors to cover losses, RTÉ reports.
7. #BREAST CANCER: Actress Angelina Jolie has revealed that she underwent a preventative double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. Jolie’s mother died of the disease at 56 and after tests she had been told she carries the BRCA1 gene, with an estimated risk of 87 per cent of developing breast cancer and a 50 per cent risk of ovarian cancer.
8. #FRANCE: The French government is considering introducing a new tax on internet-linked devices like smartphones and tablets, AP reports. The revenue from the one per cent tax would be used to help cultural industries create content such as music, images and videos.
9. #TIME OF THE MONTH: A new survey has shown women believe that men would exaggerate their condition of they suffered from pre-menstrual syndrome every month. Though 16 per cent said they sometimes don’t recognise their own behaviour while experiencing PMS, almost half said they don’t do anything to manage their symptoms.
