#Áras11 Quickfire Video Quiz: Michael D Higgins

TheJournal.ie put a series of quickfire questions to the Presidential candidates. Here is how they did – on camera.

WITH LESS THAN a week to polling day, TheJournal.ie brings you a series of quickfire quizzes with the Presidential candidates.

We questioned them on some trivia, some pop culture – and on an issue that has dominated each of their campaigns. Dana Rosemary Scallon has so far declined an interview.

Watch and see how the other six did.

  • Most telling that he chose Article 12, an obligation to the citizens of Ireland whereas Sean Gallagher was straight to Article 26; right to the heart of the only bit of power he President holds. This was the first time I’d watched an interview with any of the candidates. Higgins seems quirky but forthright, with heart.

  • It’s not just here, but I have to laugh at all these “he’s too old to be elected” comments. Douglas Hyde was 78 when he was elected.

there’s no doubt michael d. would be a half decent prez- he might get my number 2, but number 1 is still reserved for McGuinness!

  • how can someone be over mandatory retirement age and still be considered for one of the most important positions in the country is beyond me…

    • Plenty of people past the mandatory retirement age work in gainful employment. Apparently that’s the way the world is moving in any case, where the retirement age is being increased every day and will probably be 75 by the time every 20-year old in 2011 gets to retire!
Michael D may not be as eloquent or articulate as Mr. Norris, or as slick as Mr. Gallagher, but he has a wealth of experience and wisdom to offer the position and does indeed have many many building blocks he can utilise if he’s elected :)

    • There is hope when a militant Atheist and a Dana supporter can agree on something. But Sheelagh is right on this one. Gis If you are of the opinion that Michael D might die in office and that we would have to pay for another election, how would you feel about saying on this page that we shouldnt employ women of childbearing age because they might become pregnant and the State or the employer shouldnt have to pay for this? We dont do this not just because it would be politically incorrect in the extreme but also because best evidence shows that societies that dont value the expertise that all humans can bring to situations the worse off these societies are. The age risk of someone is offset by the expertise and life skills they have gained. Unfortunately it is not always true that age brings wisdom such as in the case of Ratzinger but in many cases it does.

  • Can i call a spade a spade and say it for the record … I really dont think this dithery little man knows whats going on in the world. He still thinks we are dealing in pennies and pounds, never mind how badly he performed in the picture quiz. This guy would be a liability meeting world leaders, unless thay can all speak Irish and want to be talked to like children… and last time i heard it, world leaders are that big into that.
