BMW HAS FINALLY whipped the covers off its X2 Sports Activity Coupé.
Unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show in concept form, the BMW X2 is the coupé version of the X1, just as the X6 is to the X5 and the X4 to the X3 – the even-numbered BMW off-roaders are supposed to be the sportier coupe-like versions of their odd-numbered counterparts.
The new X2 shares its wheelbase with the BMW X1, but the new car is shorter and over 70mm lower overall. Up front are some striking upside down kidney grilles (they are wider at the base than at the top) and distinctive LED daytime running lights too, and customers can upgrade to full-LED headlamps if they so desire.
Around the back the slim lights are LED as standard and there is a modest roof spoiler but there is a more prominent one available on the options list. When it comes to alloys, there are 11 designs to choose from and sizes range from 17 to 20 inches.
From launch, the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant will be available. It produces 190hp and 400Nm of torque enabling a zero to 100km/h time of 7.7 seconds. Official fuel consumption is rated at 4.6 litres/100km (61.4mpg), while CO2 emissions are from 121g/km but will depend on wheel option.
Further variants of the BMW X2 will be added to the line-up in early 2018 including the the four-cylinder X2 sDrive20i, X2 sDrive18d and X2 xDrive18d - ’sDrive’ means two-wheel drive, xDrive means all-wheel drive.
Trim levels on offer are the SE, Sport, M Sport and M Sport X.
The car’s driving responses can be adapted by using the Driving Experience Control switch, allowing the driver to choose between default Comfort mode, efficiency-enhancing Eco Pro mode and Sport mode. If the optional Dynamic Damper Control is specified, the car’s suspension can be adjusted even more precisely to individual requirements.
The BMW X2 M Sport and M Sport X models offer suspension which is 10mm lower than the standard suspension.
There is plenty of tech onboard too and as standard there is a 6.5-inch Touch Control Display with navigation system and rear parking distance control but a whole suite of technology options are offered.
Prices start from €50,320 OTR for a BMW X2 xDrive20d SE. The car is available to order from mid-November.
