Bertie Ahern says Brexit would be "negative in every way"

The UK will go to the polls to vote on leaving the EU on 23 June.

FORMER TAOISEACH BERTIE Ahern has spoken out about the possible damage a Brexit could do Britain’s relationship with Ireland.

Speaking today he has said that Britain exiting the EU would be “negative in every way” for the relationship between the two countries.

Ahern added his voice to the debate 10 weeks before the UK goes to the polls to vote in the In-Out referendum on 23 June.

“We’re the only place that has a land border with Britain,” he told Sky News.

Of course others would exploit and expose it. And then the UK – to follow the logic of their argument where they say the number one thing they are concerned with is the border – they would have to check people.

He went on to say that although the aim wouldn’t be to “hassle” the Irish, they would have to check them.

The former taoiseach’s contribution follows concerns about a possible Brexit being raised by Irish business group Ibec.

It has claimed that the United Kingdom leaving the EU could see trade with Ireland drop by up to 20%.
