Broken oven fan forces plane to make emergency landing at Shannon

The Dallas-bound American Airlines jet was already over the Atlantic when crew detected a worrying smell of smoke.

AN AMERICAN AIRLINES jet carrying 150 passengers to the US was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport earlier today.

The Boeing 767 was already over the Atlantic – en route to Dallas from Charles de Gaulle in Paris – when crew members detected a smell of smoke in the cabin.

A spokesperson for American Airlines told TheJournal.ie that as a precaution, the decision was taken to turn back and land at the nearest airport, which was Shannon.

The plane landed without incident and all passengers departed the craft, as normal. Nobody was injured, added the spokesman.

After an inspection, a minor problem was discovered in a fan in one of the airplane’s ovens. The craft remains at Shannon as repair workers wait on a necessary part.

Another plane was scheduled to fly from Heathrow and pick up the Dallas-bound passengers at 7pm so they could resume their journey.
