Man dies after being shot at Mayo petrol station

The 26-year-old was shot a number of times in Castlebar this afternoon.

A 26-YEAR-OLD man has died of his injuries after being shot at a petrol station in Mayo earlier today.

The man was at the service station on the Moneen Road in Castlebar when he was shot a number of times. The shooting happened at around 3.30pm this afternoon.

Gardaí confirmed that he was pronounced dead at Mayo General Hospital at 8pm tonight.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis will carry out a post mortem on Thursday morning.

Gardai say that they are looking for a dark-coloured estate car which left the area after the shooting, in the direction of Claremorris. They are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Castlebar Garda station on 094 9038200 or on the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

There have no yet been any arrests in relation to the incident and gardai are carrying out a full technical examination of the scene.
