A MAN IN his early 20s is being treated in Sligo General Hospital following an early-morning road crash.

The single-vehicle collision occurred on the Tubbercurry to Ballymote road at Drimroe, just one mile outside Tubbercurry, at about 3.40am today.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

The stretch of road is currently closed pending completion of a forensic examination. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Ballymote have issued an appeal for witnesses. Anyone with information can contact the local station on 071 918 9500.

Yesterday, two men lost their lives in separate road incidents. A young motorcyclist in Dublin was killed when the bike he was travelling on collided with a lorry at lunch time. And in Kerry, a man in his 40s died after the car he was driving struck a lorry.

So far this year, 43 people have died in road traffic collisions on Irish roads. In 2012, the corresponding number was 28.

  • Hope this person makes a recovery.

On side note it seems road deaths are back on the increase. Why is this? Is it because the public are aware that there are less Traffic Gardai patrolling due to a reduced fleet?
There are less Gardai doing checkpoints now. And the Gardai that are out stopping traffic are driving Ford Transits. What hope has a Garda in a ford transit trying to stop a boy racer from speeding

Blaming lack of enforcement on gardai is not looking at the whole picture. Road condition is also playing a big role here. This year the very wet conditions have played a big part in destroying already badly damaged roads. Ditches & hedges are not being cleaned & so grow out on the roads & narrow them. Also a result of this are people driving defective cars due to road damage & being unable to repair them because of financial woes. Road safety issues are never about 1 or 2 problems & accidents usually happen as a result of many factors. Thats why I not convinced that putting resources into targeting one issue solves anything. Its great for public perception & the media but eventually the results tail off.

    • No Mjhint, not blaming it on the Gardai. Blaming it on the government for cutting services within the Gardai.

    • Back on the increase from when? The Gardai cannot possibly be on every road where these accidents happened. Yes speed kills but not always by driving a couple of kms over the limit, but rather driving too fast to suit road conditions, and tailgating. You are always get drivers who will never expect the unexpected.
