“Don’t do it again” – Warning for travellers after horse race on Cork road

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the sulky race on the Cork to Mallow road on Saturday as Pavee Point issued a warning to Travellers this morning.

The video of part of the sulky race was uploaded to YouTube this week.

THE TRAVELLERS’ GROUP Pavee Point has warned those involved in the harness race on the Cork to Mallow road at the weekend not to even contemplate doing it again.

A video of part of the race appeared on YouTube this week with Gardaí shown pursuing two horses who were pulling the distinctive two-wheeled sulky carts and riders.

Ben Archibald from Pavee Point told RTÉ radio that the video “depicts seriously reckless behaviour” which put lives at risk.

“It was dangerous for the animals, dangerous for those taking part, those taking part in pursuit and those to the side of the race videoing it,” he told Morning Ireland.

Gardaí have confirmed they have made one arrest in connection with the incident and their investigations are continuing. They are appealing to motorists who may have been on the Cork to Mallow road between 7am and 8am last Saturday to contact them.

Archibald said that while sulky racing was a long-standing tradition in the Traveller community it is expected that it takes place in areas where it is safe and regulated.

He encouraged those wishing to do it to co-ordiante with local authorities in order to do it in a safe way. ”What we saw in that video, was just a serious risk to life. There’s nothing cultural about that,” he said.

Asked if he had a message for those involved, he added: “Don’t do it again, don’t even contemplate doing something as reckless as misusing a public road in this way and put people’s lives at risk.”

  • The two racers need to be arrested and also the person driving the van in which the video was shot. He was all over the road and heading into oncoming traffic and it seems like he was holding a video camera the whole time.
I couldn’t give a toss about their culture. They were illegally racing on the road and put lives at risk and should face the consequences.

  • The Travellers have been pussy footed around for years, They have flouted laws, have more spent on Social houses per unit , and want everyone to bend over backwards to appease them. Nothing will happen, a list of serious road laws were broken , but hey it seems in Ireland laws only apply to the hard pressed taxpayers.

  • There is an off road sulky track near Leap in West Cork. Custom built for the job. The problem is that it is not just the culture of travellers it is the constant hassle that seems to follow there total disregard for others.

  • This pandering to the needs of travellers needs to stop. I’m sick of them getting everything on a plate, Especially when they show blatant disregard to others and the law. The Gardaí need to come down hard on this sort of activity. The ISPCA should also have the authority to confiscate the animals. Rant over.

A safe way would be a track or field. Those animals should not be running on tarmac or concrete!
Why not give Fairyhouse or similar a few bob and go nuts in there some day during the week? Heck, I’ll even video tape it for them!

    • Oh sorry, but I would not want reckless, irresponsible criminals like those in that video within an asses roar of Fairyhouse or any other other of our fine racetracks, they don’t deserve the use of such facilities. The blatant disregard for human safety shown in that video, the arrogance of those involved and ignorance of the laws of the land and those who enforce it is beyond belief. Let them race around a room about 10 foot square with a steel door and bars on the windows, that’s the height of what they deserve

    • I’m not talking about the idiots in the video, I mean people who do this in general.
If they were doing it correctly, and properly, then there would be no issue

  • Discrimination against us “non-travellers”. If I did what they did in that van, I would be done for dangerous driving, probably no tax, have the van impounded and lose my license. They get a slap on the wrist. Sickening.

  • Why do we, as a society, continue to indulge the Traveller Community? If any non-Traveller engaged in this reckless behaviour he would face the full rigours of the law without public sympathy. Travellers are not an ethic minority, they are just Irish and should be treated as such for better and worse. Those who engage in criminality should be treated in the same way as non-Traveller criminals. Can we really justify continuing to fund the cost of State-backed Traveller advocacy groups?

  • “don’t do it again” Jeez, tough words, they must be so sorry for doing it after that stern talking too!! How about a prosecution!! Is the article accurate, they only acknowledged the safety risk to the people directly involved in the incident and not the other motorists on the road!! I recall a case a few years back where two high performance cars were filmed racing up the M50, the road was empty but the Gards, heavily prosecuted both of them, no less should be done to those involved in this incident!!

  • what is this nonsence about travellers being a different ethnic group ?…they are white Irish same as most of us….they just choose to live in an anti social way….I for one do not like to be referred to as part of the “setteled” communinty as it implies that formally I was a traveller…those clowns in Cork should be jailed for endangering lives…and apart from anything else the image the portray to visitors or tourists of Ireland is appaling

    Reply
  • Oh that’s telling them. The whole lot of them should be locked up! Considering a young woman only lost her life on that road recently and alot of loves have been lost on that road over the years displays in abundance these guys respect for life and society. This is an activity ONLY TRAVELLERS engage in and to set an example they should be all prosecuted for it!

  • I notice Pavee Point’s statement didn’t include a request for those involved, or those that know them, to come forward and confess to the Guards. Does this organisation recognise that their community should be following the laws of the state? The state which, as others have pointed out, funds the anti-social lifestyle they choose to live. The government needs a comprehensive plan aimed at integrating this group into mainstream society.

  • 6 shots fired into traveller house on saturday night in Balbriggan, and not a word said about it on the news. Sure it’s only a family feud…well what about the rest of the residents that have to live in the estate! They don’t worry about the law because when they’re threatened with it they use intimidation and bully tactics. The Gardai let them away with it rather than risk a full scale riot involving slash hooks. Sick of listening to their “ethnic minority” bullshit. Just because your part of a minority group, doesn’t make you above the law. What if some Iranian nationals decided to bury a woman up to her naeck in the Phoenix Park for a stoning..would we all accept it as part of their “culture”.

  • Also, because of the tried and tested legal system in this country, the gardai can’t use any of the video evidence uploaded onto YouTube unless they can obtain the original hard copy as evidence. Simply watching it and taking down the reg numbers and bringing them to court won’t work. It Will be dismissed. Sure, they’ll know who did it, but who owns the evidence? That’s not going to be handed over ! More than likely it’s deleted by now, albeit they were stupid enough to upload it…. So maybe…..

If they want to be accepted into society this special treatment has to stop, for example a traveller can do a CE scheme at 16 while the rest of us have to wait til 25 years old!!!!!

More stick and less carrot is needed in relation to the traveller gang. Im personally am glad that Clare coco have ceased building traveller specific housing, due to it costing 7 times more to build due to having to concrete the copper pipes into the walls.

  • Seriously “don’t do it again “. Is that the best he could come up with. The likes of this is going in every week across Ireland. This one was only brought to attention because someone recorded it. I’ve seen those horse and traps going across the m50 on occasion.

  • There are three males in Sligo Distrct Court today, Thursday 10th may, charged with these exact offences. Interesting to see what penalties, if any, they will get. Apparently, the offence for it is so old, that the maximum fine is something like €2

  • It is good to see Pavee Point speaking out to condemn such behaviour. Pavee Point represent less than 1% of the population who in turn take up much more than 1% of headlines and other activity.
The chaotic nature of traveller life is worrying. Obesity levels among it young men is epidemic , suicide levels are above the national average and because most travellers are early school leavers there is no opportunity to progress in life. This is really evident when for whatever reason they appear on TV or are interviewed. As society moves forward the Travelling Community stays still which means they travel backwards. Where will they be in 50 years ? The Traveller issue needs addressing sooner rather than later preferably from within.

The pilfering of scrap around the country has been put down to “organised crime”, the gang warfare of recent times has been similarly pigeon holed, and the explosion of crime in areas such as West Dublin remains an unquestioned anomaly.

    • Don’t think the gardai are not doing anything about just because they are not as vocal as the people commenting on this article doesn’t mean it’s not being investigated. You don’t have to arrest everybody straight away especially considering the number of travellers involved relative to the gardai. Also we will see how many witnesses come forward and are willing to stand up in court and point the finger.

We need to challange the media taboo that does not permit a reasonable discussion on the topic of (capital T) travellers. We need to challange the labels which they and their media sympathisers use: ‘disenfanchised’ ‘marginalized’ ‘oppressed’, (take you pick), so that theses labels no longer carry water.

As regards the media sympathisers, it is all the more galling that those commentators who lecture us and set the agenda, usually live in nice area’s where they will never experience the havoc that travellers can wreak.

What went unremarked on during this morning’s interview (sadly RTÉ shy away from possibly offending demographics), was the pronouncement by this quango’s talking head that we need to throw more money at the problem, namely though landing the problem at the door of local authorities. They should, he mused, liaise with traveller groups in order to allow the poor unfortunates somewhere to bate their horses around in an orgy of gambling and roaring.

See? Even when they screw up, we’re still expected to pay for it.

  • As I suspected they’ll get away scot free only to do it again elsewhere. The Garda are for too lenient on Travellers, hard pressed taxpayers get the full brunt of the law while Travellers get a slap on the wrist. I’m of the understanding that laws apply to everyone in the state regardless of ethnic background, correct me if I’m wrong.

    • The law is applied to everyone equally. Unfortunately the justice part is a sham. Justice is the part dealt with by the courts. Some gardai will tell you, it’s like banging their head against a wall doing everything possible to bring these people to court only for them to get off with a slap across the hand.

There was cars and vans driving on the wrong side of the road.i came upon one of these races between Lahinch and ennistymon about 2 years ago. I had to pull over to get out of there way as they were on my side of the road coming at me. I had my wife and 2 kids in the car.this happens regularly and the Gardai do nothing. If that was 2 regular people not travellers they would be jailed.the Gardai are a joke

  • First of all, travellers are indeed an ethnic minority, which is defined as “A group that has different national or cultural traditions from the main population.” Ethnic minorities need to be protected by law and have the right to exercise their own cultural practices, however this does not extend itself to the behavior shown in the video, which Pavee Point have already said.

Secondly, people are complaining that travellers are not punished to the full extent of the law as settled people would be in a similar circumstance. Of course there should equality in exercising the rule of law to all people regardless of ethnic background. But you can’t say that you want travellers punished to the full extent of the law, while continuing to discriminate against them in every other aspect of society, that’s not equality.

    • What about the positive discrimination they face?? Can go on a community employment scheme at 16 years old while everyone else has to be 25? Or the fact many travellers get a free bus from sites to schools or in some sites have their own teachers!!!

      Reply
    • Because travellers generally come from a poorer socio-economic background, are discriminated against in employment, are less likely to finish school, and have the highest suicide rate and lowest life expectancy of any group in Ireland… need I go on?

      Reply
    • they are not an ethnic minority….they are white Irish…like me…blacks or Asians in Ireland are an ethnic minority….travellers choose their way of living and its consequences and we the general population pay for their choices

      Reply
    • So anyone who doesn’t adhere to what you deem to be “social norms” deserves to live in poverty and to die young? It’s not a consequence of their lifestyle (which is generally positive bar the example in the video), it’s a consequence of a system that actively discriminates against their lifestyle.

And I already gave you the definition of an ethnic minority, which you are confusing with race. I suggest you read the dictionary, and while you’re at it look up “bigot”.

      Reply
    • What Gearóid is trying to point out here is that Travellers have a different need set to Irish people because of their poor health, lack of education and living standards that are generally below the national average. They are officially classed as an ethnic minority here in Britain, I work with Irish Travellers within the social services in London. I’m not sure of their ethnic minority status in Ireland, they are seen as a special group alright due to the fact that they have different needs and attitudes towards engaging with services (for example, Travellers have very low turnouts at GPs therefore suffer from late detection of illness etc). As I said, I only work with Travellers in England, can’t really specify exact stats for Travellers in Ireland.

However, it doesn’t excuse the reckless behaviour in the video that displays their culture. I know this road very well and have known people to have died on this stretch of road. This is completely unacceptable and the authorities should prosecute whether they’re Travellers or not.

@gearoid – travellers have a hard time getting a job in a normal market because they choose to leave school early, with a low level of literacy which persists despite multiple channels available to rectify this, also the reputation of travellers in Ireland is now synonymous with criminality, violence and reckless behaviour. Apart from this story, travellers have recently been in the media for fighting in a hospital, samurai swords at a wedding, knife fight in a school, massive illegal dumping near coo lock, 1 million welfare fraud, riots in mullingar, multiple bar fights, Stanley knives at a christening , fight at a confirmation and on and on. Not bad for 1% of the population.

    • @gearoid!!! Yes and there is a hell of a lot of people who have been brought up the same, yet they CHOOSE to change their life circumstances by honest hard work!!! Lower socio economic back ground my ass…look at traveller cars, alway new, luxury caravans….they get free health care but again CHOOSE not to take it up….various grants and schemes to help them go to college etc yet they CHOOSE not too

      Reply
    • You’re getting offended because I called you a bigot? How ironic. Do you not think it’s a bit rich to take offence given the intolerance you’ve shown towards another lifestyle? You grew up in poverty and “chose” to better yourself? Are you saying that those who continue to live in poverty choose not to better themselves? The reality is, that doors are generally closed to people of lower socio-economic backgrounds because of their circumstances and it’s only a few who manage to “better themselves”, which is more through luck than choice.

Also, I’m not defending criminality, I already said the actions in the video were inexcusable. I’m trying to bring balance to an argument that has been overwhelmingly biased against travellers. And to say that criminality is wholly representative of travellers, or their culture, is absurd in the extreme. There are plenty of travellers in my area and I’ve never had any problem with them, most of them are honest, law abiding, decent individuals. Yes there is an element of criminality amongst travellers, but to further marginalize the entire community based on the actions of a few is wrong.
