  • I love Michael D Higgins, every time I see him, I can’t help but smile. He is a great ambassador for us and we should be sending HIM everywhere and keeping the other government trolls hidden under rocks here.

  • I’m still waiting to be impressed by President Higgins.

I really want to be, but he’s been almost invisible since he was elected.

Now, more than ever, we require a dynamic visible leader. One who has a monthly tv & radio slot addressing the state of our nation & keeping us informed of the actions, good & bad of our government.

Hopefully after this high profile visit, we’ll get more than we’ve had so far.

Good luck in the USA Mr. President. Convince them to bring some green to us.

    • Why do you need the President to keep you informed of the actions of the Government? Their actions are there for all to see in the media. Nevermind the fact that he is restricted from passing comment on those actions anyway to a large extent.
I doubt very much we will see the President going cap in hand with a begging bowl in the U.S. because thankfully he represents the Irish people not Irelandinc.
Don’t get me wrong, if investment follows that’s great but surely Enda took care of all that stuff on the balcony with Denis et al.
As for invisibility, you can check all his engagements here.

  • Michael, build a fire under the government’s hindquarters and push some anti-corruption legislation. Stiff penalties for brown envelopes and all that. Y’know what needs doing. You can’t have a free nation when the government is for sale. You’ll see plenty of examples where you’re heading.

  • This is the second time I’ve heard about our President Higgins in the news. The other time was when he had his op, wonder who paid for that!

Do we really need a President?

Wouldn’t the money saved in their salaries and pensions be better spent else where?

And as @Fly The Irish Flag said, I’m still waiting to be impressed by President Higgins.

  • I know this may be rather unpopular as a view judging by the comments here but…I find Michael D Higgins ineffectual, unimpressive and rather lack lustre.

I remember watching the final debate before the election and I have to say I was thoroughly unimpressed by him. I am sure he is a very nice man and all, but I think he was the best of a rather poor bunch who ran for president.

If Ireland is going to have a president then at least lets have a little fire, youth and brimstone. He is not a good advert for the country and if his role is to truly promote Ireland then he is doing a poor job. Nobody wants to see a man of his age trapsing round the world on our tax money…The Washington Post said it all for me “local satirists sometimes depict him as an elf, hobbit or leprechaun talking in riddles and verse”.

    But thats just my opinion…
