A POLICEMAN HAS been suspended from London’s Metropolitan Police after the Guardian newspaper published a recording of racist abuse allegedly from a police officer.

Sky News reports that a policeman has been suspended and that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is reviewing an initial decision not to charge an officer alleged to have made the racist comments following complaints from a 21-year-old man at the centre of the story.

After the man from Beckton in East London was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence the day after last summer’s English riots, he is said to have recorded what followed.

In the recording, published on The Guardian website, a man identified only as ‘Officer B’ is heard telling the arrested man:

The problem with you is you will always be a n*****, yeah? That’s your problem, yeah…

… You’ll always have black skin colour. Don’t hide behind your colour, yeah. Be proud. Be proud of who you are, yeah. Don’t hide behind your black skin.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said that the Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigating the incident: “These are serious allegations; any use of racist language or excessive use of force is not acceptable.”

One officer has been suspended, one has been placed on restricted duties on an unrelated matter and another remains on full duties, the Met Police added.

  • I’m not agreeing with what was said but when I read the quote from the article I can’t help but think that things have been blown out of proportion a wee bit.

“The problem with you is you will always be a n*****, yeah?”

That part is racist. When you strip the quotation into parts, there’s no question this is a racist comment. But then the officer follows it up with telling the person to be proud of who he is, to be proud of his colour and to not hide behind his skin colour.

Police officers will try and connect with the person they’re questioning. It relaxes the people so they might talk more. What the quote screams to me is that maybe the officer was using the term because the person openly uses it. Maybe it was the officers way of using the persons own language in order to make that connection to get him to talk?

Obviously I haven’t a clue but you need to look at the quote as a whole. He unfortunately used a racist term but if the “n” word wasn’t there and he said ‘The problem with you is you will always be black, yeah?’ It adds a new meaning to it. I honestly feel that even though a racially abusive term was used, the officer wasn’t being racist. The thought I get from it is that he or she is implying that the person is using their colour as an excuse to commit crime (assuming a crime was committed) and that the officer is just trying to say that colour is no barrier, be proud of it and achieve what you want. It’s not colour holding the person back, it’s the persons mentality.

We don’t see the full picture from the above quote. Either way, whether I’m right or not, I disagree with a member of law enforcement using a racially abusive term….Sorry for another LONG comment :-)

    • Are you from this planet? do you have any idea what its like to be devalued and treated like less than human. you cant get a job because your at the bottom of the ladder……Even if you are a 2nd or 3rd generation black British the colour of your skin puts you at the bottom of the heap…. behind European migrants because the SKIN COLOUR queue means you will always be bottom. Police afficers are the new modern day SLAVE OVERSEERS. They make their own rules up when they think no one is looking or hearing them.

the comment ……Maybe it was the officers way of using the persons own language in order to make that connection to get him to talk?….. is totally ridiculous. they both speak English and a fool would know that the officers language is offensive.

wake up and smell the coffee and stop talking about something you know nothing about. I am a Phd researcher in race topics. you need to read Peggy Mcintosh….THE INVISIBLE KNAPSACK…. it talks of white privilege, or why dont you read. CHARLES MILLS’S THE RACIAL CONTRACT……BEFORE YOU MAKE EMPTY SHALLOW COMMENTS…….. walk a mile in black shoes.

  • I disagree David, I have lived in London for 14 years and it is (in my opinion) one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. You hear almost every language/dialect there is as you walk around. That said, you get racist fools, whatever their colour, no matter where you go.

    • Because he used a racist term…. N####. What ever context it’s used in is inappropriate at best. Having spent time in many international cities, London is definitely one of the most discriminative against everyone. Very little interaction on a social level outside the workplace and outside organised events like football or concerts.

    • It’s inappropriate unless you are in music, tv or movies. Where’s all the outcry about rap artists using the word?

  • Gavin, the word commas does not need an apostrophe. They are only used to highlight ommisions as in “could’nt”, or in the possesive, as in “Joe’s diner”. Dont jump on someone about their english unless you can use it yourself to at least a secondary school standard you pompus ass.

  • I was in london for 2 years and its the most racist city I was ever in the police are definitly racist They called me racist names when I was stopped for parking problem I complained to the police station with the service numbers of the police but they said they wasnt on duty at the time My solicitor told me that the police officers swap numbers so its very hard to pin them down and also very hard to prove it.
