Michael D Higgins to host Vita Cortex workers in the Áras

The President is also set to meet with the mayor of Poznan next week.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins is set to meet with the former Vita Cortex workers next week, two months after the sit-in at their former workplace ended.

The president will hold a reception for the workers and their families at Áras an Uachtaráin on Tuesday afternoon.

The workers at the plant spent a total of 161 days at the Vita Cortex plant in Cork after the company owner refused to make redundancy payments to staff.

The workers received messages from a number of high-profile supporters during the sit-in, including Mary Robinson, Noam Chomsky and Alex Ferguson. There was also a high-profile campaign across Facebook and Twitter which saw thousands of people supporting the protest.

A resolution to the dispute was reached on day 139, after workers had already spent more than four months at the plant, but the workers refused to leave until the payments had reached the bank accounts of all of the former employees.

The president will also be meeting with the mayor of Poznan, Ryszard Grobelny, at Áras an Uachtaráin next week. The mayor sponsored advertising billboards in Dublin to say thanks to Irish fans for going to Poznan during Euro 2012.
