Landmark National Irish Bank building goes on sale for €4 million

The giant building in Dublin city centre which has housed various banks since 1867 is being put up for sale by NIB’s owners Danske Bank.

ONE OF THE most prominent branches of National Irish Bank in Dublin city centre has gone on sale for €4 million.

The 2,850 square metre property on Dame Street at College Green, which has housed various banks since 1867, is being sold as NIB’s owners Danske Bank sell of branches around the country as part of its shift to internet and telephone banking.

Savills, the estate agent which is selling the property, suggests that it could be used to house a shop, in the same way that the former Bank of Ireland on College Green is now an Abercrombie and Fitch.

The listing for the property describes it as being Italian Gothic with a corner tower and a French chateau-like roof line. The interior has decorative arches, columns which stretch from the ground to the second floor, and a banking hall with a vaulted ceiling.

National Irish Bank was bought in 2005 and was officially rebranded as Danske Bank this week. The bank closed down the last of its 27 branches around the country last week after moving its retail operations to a centralised call centre.
