THE GARDA OMBUDSMAN has launched an investigation into the death of a man who was being held in garda custody in Co Louth last night.
Gardaí found a man in a distressed state after they were called to a shop in Green Acres in Dundalk, Co Louth at around 9.30pm last night, RTÉ reports.
The man, in his early 30s, was detained at the scene but became unwell. He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he was pronounced dead around an hour later.
A postmortem on the deceased man is due to be carried out today and the Garda Ombudsman has been informed. Officers from the commission were at the scene overnight, the Irish Times adds.
