If they acquired Aer Lingus, there would be a monopoly. They would have sole control of flights in Ireland. Escalated prices due to no competition.

Ok, think a different way about it…

If Ryanair bought Aerlingus the Irish government would get a reasonable price for its shares in, what can only be described as, a declining airline. Flybe (Waterford airport) and other airlines would pick up where Aerlingus left off and would keep Ryanair fares down. We live in a European economy and I think we should be pragmatic about this sort of thing and embrace change. After all, Ryanair pays its taxes within Ireland – could you imaging the additional revenue brought in with a budget transatlantic service from Europe – Ryanair would clean up and so would the Irish revenue.
And yes, a €200 return flight to the USA would be quite handy for most of us. Of course, flying without checked luggage, priority boarding, 1 item of hand luggage and booking with the right kind of visa card would have to be considered but if you don’t like it – fly delta, Virgin or any number of other ‘quality’ (expensive) airlines.

If it was any other company bidding for Aerlingus then the sale would have gone through as the Irish government have already stated that they would sell their shares.

In short it’s not going to significantly reduce jobs as we all know that Ryanairs mantra is to keep the plane flying as much as possible. It’s not anti-competitive as Ireland plc have said they’d sell to anyone else effectively ending Aerlingus’ Irish ownership anyway. It’s actually going to bring in a whole new revenue stream for Ireland plc from Europe.
Only downside is you’ll end up paying for your inflight movie, inconvenience in the booking process and probably sh1te customer service. I’ll live with that for a cheap flight to the USA and so would most of us.
