1. #AHERN: Bertie Ahern says that the “best way I can now serve Fianna Fáil is to tender my resignation” as a party member. In a piece published by the Sunday Independent this morning, Ahern says that the past week has “been an extremely difficult and emotional one for me” because of the Mahon report, and reiterated his earlier statements that he has done “nothing wrong or dishonest”.
2. #CELIA: Meanwhile, Ahern’s former partner Celia Larkin also writes in the Sunday Independent that she was “sad” the Tribunal had rejected much of Ahern’s evidence. Larkin says that although Ahern could be vague, evasive, belligerent “and sometimes downright rude”, she never thought him corrupt.
3. #KOREAS: As US President Barack Obama visits South Korea ahead of tomorrow’s nuclear summit in Seoul, South Korean officials say that North Korea has moved a long-range missile to a launch site.
4. #BLACK GOLD: The Barryroe well off the coast of Cork is Ireland’s first commercially-viable oil well. But how much is the discovery actually worth to us?
5. #CHINA: Taoiseach Enda Kenny starts a four-day trade mission to China today where he will meet with business and political leaders.
6. #HONEYMOON MURDER: British citizen Shrien Dewani faces extradition to South Africa for allegedly organising his wife’s killing while the couple were on honeymoon in November 2010, though the Telegraph reports that inconsistencies have arisen in the police investigation.
7. #DUBLIN: One man has died after falling into the Tolka River in Dublin yesterday evening, RTÉ reports.
8. #SYRIA: Damascus is experiencing a surge in crime as people apparently take advantage of the turmoil amid the government’s ongoing crackdown on political dissent. The government blames members of the opposition and army defectors for the increased reports of armed robberies and break-ins, while the opposition says the government is allowing lawlessness as a ploy to prove how chaotic the uprising has become.
