OVER ONE THOUSAND people are expected to don full nuns’ habits and descend on Listowel this weekend, as the Kerry town looks to break a Guinness world record.

Best known as the hometown of playwright John B. Keane, Listowel is aiming to set  a new record for the largest gathering of people in one place dressed as nuns, with 1,4000 people expected to break the previous number of 250.

Organisers have already run out of nuns habits, but any latecomers can bring their own. However, they must comply with the Guinness World Record guidelines, that is it must be a full nun habit, that includes black habit white coif, and black veil.

All money raised by the event will go to Pieta House, the suicide and self harm prevention centre.

Nunday, which will kick off at 5.30pm in Frank Sheehy Park TODAY is the brainchild of Cora O’Brien.

The Listowel woman lost her son David to suicide in 2007, and is now actively involved in suicide prevention in Kerry.

The world record attempt will be followed by a parade through the town and a Nun’s Beat on the Street at Listowel Town Square.
