Three Irish authors in running for prestigious IMPAC prize

This year has seen the most ever Irish writers make the shortlist for the €100,000 prize, which sees authors nominated by public libraries world-wide.

THREE IRISH AUTHORS have been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the world – the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Colum McCann (Let the Great World Spin), Colm Tóibín (Brooklyn) and William Trevor (Love and Summer) are among ten writers that have been selected to run for this year’s €100,000 prize. A total of 162 novels were nominated by libraries from across the world – a method which takes the nominations out of the hands of academics and critics alone.

IMPAC is also unique in that is allows a work that has been originally written in any language to be included in the running – so long as it has also been translated into English.

Colum McCann’s novel saw him receive nominations by libraries in Germany, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Switzerland, Canada and the USA.

Likewise, Colm Tóibín’s book was put forward by libraries in Belgium, England, Ireland, Switzerland, South Africa, New Zealand and the US; while libraries in Ireland and the US nominated veteran writer William Trevor’s novel.

Trevor, 83, is expected to make a rare appearance at the ceremony, the Irish Independent reports.

Colm Tóibín is already a winner of the International Impac Dublin Literary Award, having won in 2006.
