TWO PSNI OFFICERS have been arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption in Co Tyrone.

The two have been released on bail and are suspended from duty, the BBC reports. Five others from the same team in Cookstown have also been repositioned.

“Any conduct, whether on or off duty, which brings or is likely to bring discredit on the Police Service will be investigated in order to establish whether or not a breach of the Code of Ethics has occurred,” said Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton.

Details of the alleged misconduct have not been released.

  • I think these people should be subject to harsher penalties than normal given their position. I’m not normally agreeable to custodial sentences where there is no physical danger to the public but in the case of corrupt cops I’d make an exception!

  • Anyone who doubts the need for a more aggressive approach should read the facts concerning Donegal gardai who put an innocent man behind bars for three years. Set his pub on fire and ruined his life. How many others are in the same situation? Even still most complaints are referred back to the Gardai by the Ombudsman for investigation by the Gardai themselves. Nothing therefore has changed. Police corruption is still endemic but Irish people prefer to cod themselves. Sorry to burst your baloon!

  • Why do the police not say what the alleged offence involved? Typically they disclose as little as possible. People expect more than they get. Cops always get away with corruption. Last year for instance about 4000 people complained to the Garda Ombudsman. There were one or two convictions
. So these organisations have no teeth.Public relations!
