Volkswagen T-Roc compact SUV debuts

Volkswagen’s junior crossover will be here in December.

THE NEW T-ROC compact-class crossover is the fourth SUV from Volkswagen and sits below the Touareg, Atlas and Tiguan in the line-up.

We saw the original T-Roc concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, which Volkswagen called an ‘SUV in the Golf format’.

The T-Roc is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) - the platform used by the Volkswagen Group on everything from the Audi Q2 to the SEAT Ateca and Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Passat. In fact, the T-Roc looks set to rival the Q2 and Ateca as well as the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur.

The T-Roc is  the first Volkswagen SUV that will be available to order in two-tone paintwork with a contrasting roof section that includes the A-pillars and exterior mirror housings. There will be a choice of 16- or 17-inch alloys and from these photos it looks like a handsome machine with a wide and low stance, short overhangs and sweeping roofline.

Inside, the T-Roc has either a 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system and customers can spec an 11.7-inch, 133dpi Active Info Display fully digital instrument cluster. Another feature being offered by Volkswagen is the ”Security & Service” package, which includes Emergency Service, Automatic Accident Notification and Roadside Assistance.

The boot has a capacity of 445 litres with the rear seats in place or 1,290 litres with those seats tumbled.

Volkswagen in Ireland will offer the T-Roc in the familiar Trendline, Comfortline and Highline grades.

As standard, the T-Roc comes with safety features and driver’s aids such as Front Assist area monitoring with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Lane Assist.

The T-Roc is being offered with front-wheel or four-wheel ’4Motion’ drive and a six-speed manual or dual clutch (7-speed DSG) gearbox. There will be turbocharged petrol engines (TSI) and turbocharged diesels (TDI). Launch models will be a 1.0-litre 115hp TSI manual, a 1.5-litre 150hp TSI manual and 2.0-litre 150hp TDI 4Motion with DSG. Later additions to the range will be a 1.5-litre 150hp TSI DSG and a 1.6-litre 115hp TDI manual.

Pricing for Ireland has yet to be finalised and the car is expected to go on sale in December with cars available to view in showrooms during a roadshow in November.
