Work on opening Yasser Arafat grave said to have begun

France opened a murder inquiry on Arafat’s death in August on foot of claims that the Palestinian leader died of polonium poisoning.

THE PALESTINIANS BEGAN work today to open the grave of iconic leader Yasser Arafat ahead of an exhumation of his body for a murder probe, a source close to his family told AFP.

“Today they started removing concrete and stones from Arafat’s mausoleum and the work will last for almost 15 days,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“There are several phases,” he said, referring to the opening of the tomb ahead of a visit by French, Swiss and Russian experts to forensically test Arafat’s remains over suspicions he was poisoned with radioactive substance polonium.

It starts with the removal of stone and concrete and cutting the iron (framework) until they reach the soil that covers the body, which will not be removed until the arrival of the French prosecutors, Swiss experts and Russian investigators.

Yesterday, Arafat’s mausoleum, which is located at the Muqataa presidential headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah was screened from public view with blue tarpaulins ahead of the operation to open the grave.

The process of taking samples is expected to begin at the end of the month after the French and Swiss delegations arrive on November 26, officials have said.

“Because of Arafat’s position and his status, no-one will be allowed, under any circumstances, to photograph his body while the samples are taken,” the source told AFP.

When Arafat died at the age of 75 in a French military hospital near Paris on November 11, 2004, French doctors were unable to say what had killed him. Many Palestinians are convinced he was poisoned by Israel.

French prosecutors opened a murder inquiry in August after Al-Jazeera television broadcast an investigation in which Swiss experts said they had found high levels of radioactive polonium on Arafat’s personal effects.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the eighth anniversary of Arafat’s death on Sunday, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said Russia would also be helping the investigation, although he did not specify how.

“We hope for new facts that we can tell our people and the public,” Abbas said. The new investigation, he said, was “bigger and more important” that the uproar created by the Al-Jazeera inquiry.

Polonium is a highly toxic substance rarely found outside military and scientific circles which was used to kill former Russian spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with the poison at a London hotel.

The French murder inquiry was opened in late August at the request of Arafat’s widow Suha, but it has caused a split within the family, with the veteran leader’s nephew Nasser al-Qidwa on Saturday condemning the exhumation plans as “a hateful idea.”

  • Arafat may or may not have been poisoned. And there are numerous people/forces who may have had a motive for doing it. The Al Jazeera investigation that threw this whole question open produced enough evidence of poisoning to warrant opening his grave. I hope the truth can be got at here.

    • Petr. Very profound “he may or may not” have Ben poisoned. You could say they same about anyone. That’s what they are testing for.

    • My point is that some people think (and have always said) that this is a crazy conspiracy theory. The Al Jazeera investigation has shown that there is legitimate grounds for concern here; not that Arafat was definitely poisoned, but that there are legitimate grounds for such suspicion – hence my comment that he may or may not have been poisoned.

    • as to the fact that you dont believe I wathced the TV program,,, That just goe to highlight my point,,, you can believe whatever you want but it doesn’t necessarly make it true,,,,,You dont have any more credibility or less that I have here . And I restate that I did watch and like any tv documentry a healthy questioning mind is good,,, ( look at the mess the BBC is getting into) I also watched his funeral service on aljazria as wanted the english translation of the arabic speaches,, and even then to comentries were speculating as to poisen.

    • as for my red herring,,, I mad the statment as arround that stage with the high profile russian incedent, anyone whod died was suspected of having Polonium ,,, Again just do random search and you will see that you havnt discovered the wheel people from 2006 have been talking about polonium and arrafat,, here is one example from 2004 Neurologist ‘I think Arafat was poisoned’

      News 24 | November 12 2004

Amman – A leading Jordanian neurologist who regularly examined Yasser Arafat said on Friday that poisoning was the “highest” probable cause of the Palestinian leader’s mysterious death and urged that an autopsy be performed.

“One of the causes of platelet deficiency is poison,” said Dr Ashraf al-Kurdi, who examined a gravely ill Arafat in his besieged compound in the West Bank town of Rammallah two weeks ago.

Arafat died on Thursday in Paris, where he had flown on October 29 for treatment after tests indicated he had a low count of blood platelets, components that help clotting.

Although “not definitive, I believe the highest reason for Arafat’s mysterious death is poisoning,” al-Kurdi told The Associated Press in an interview on Friday.

“Therefore, there should be an autopsy performed,” added al-Kurdi, who had been Arafat’s personal physician for the last two decades.

There has been widespread speculation that Arafat could have been poisoned by Israel. Neither doctors nor Palestinian leaders have said what caused Arafat’s death after days in a coma at a Paris hospital.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on Thursday dismissed allegations that Israel killed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as “scandalous and false.”

      note:

high level of Polonium 210 was found in his body but that was discounted as the result of earlier cancer treatment.

  • A 75 year old man: extreme stressful conditions; workaholic; never took vacations; never exercised; known poor diet; known poor hygiene; badly treated, chronic health conditions and 2nd hand smoke dies. Quelle suprise.

  • yes the truth,,, would like that ,,, Am worried about several aspects though,, the excuse for failing to allow the process to be photographed or filmed,,, T
hose who believe he was poisned will continue to believe anyhow and those who dont also,, So the whole process seems pointless,
I wonder why at this point in time. If he was poisoned surely the best time would be to do tests as soon as possible arter his death,, .
It has me wondering why wait for eight years!

    • You should watch Al Jazeeera’s What Killed Arafat? which deals with most of your queries.

    • Because polonium was only recently discovered on his belongings.

    • Enid, I am sure it wil be noted internationally that you are worried.

    • Petr , I did even before made the post and it didn’t answer the questions,,, From what I have read it’s being pushed more by his wife , from Paris and not by factions here in the M. East. Again still wondering about the e year wait , As for Polonium only recently being found on his belongs it seems strange that it was not checked for as Polonium hit the international news in 2006 with the russian dipolmat in London, still a strange wait of 6 years ,,, Rory if your going to make sure its internationally noted that I was worried at least get my name right,,, would hate to go down in history spelt incorectly :)

    • Ehud,

There’s no nice way to say this: I don’t believe you. Had you seen the documentary you’d never have said this:
      -

” If he was poisoned surely the best time would be to do tests as soon as possible arter his death”

      -
There was no suspicion of poisoning following his death. It was the last thing on his grieving widow’s mind, as she says in the documentary. It was only years later when approached by Al Jazeera that she agreed to have his personal belongings tested. She was shocked at the results. Had you watching it, you’d know all of this and wouldn’t have to wonder!

It’s almost as though you don’t want the truth to come out and are getting your defence in first with “hose who believe he was poisned will continue to believe anyhow and those who dont also”

      As for this:
      -

“As for Polonium only recently being found on his belongs it seems strange that it was not checked for as Polonium hit the international news in 2006 with the russian dipolmat in London”

      -
That’s just a red herring you’re throwing into the mix. The two incidents have nothing in common and would not have effected each other in any way.

    • really no suspicion he was poisened,,, from reporting and coverage of his funeral quote “”A crowd of tens of thousands stormed the Mukata compound of Yasser Arafat in Ramallah…. When the chopper bearing Arafat’s body landed, the crowds rushed the helicopter and completely surrounded it … The vehicle carrying his coffin drove slowly through the crowd as people attempted to touch and even climb onto the coffin….

The final few yards to the gravesite found bearers carrying the casket on their shoulders as they inched closer to the crypt and managed to safely place the casket next to the grave. The crowds chanted,

“Whoever poisoned Arafat, we will drink his blood.”

I sugest even a simple google search using time limitations say 2004 to 2005 and see how many answers you get to suspecion of if he was poisened,, So like you said no nice way of putting this but your wrong,,,,,from the very begining even beofre he died there were reports ranging from poisening to aids for the demise of his health all of which presumably speculation by both sides wanting to forward their adenda. So I return to original question as to why now,,,,,Its not that I dont want to know the truth ,, It doesnt matter what it is as the die hards on both sides will continue to think what they thought before . I think that it would be a lot more useful use of time in banging heads together and getting out of the shit situation we are in now

Neurologist ‘I think Arafat was poisoned’ So to say only recently thought of polonium ,, its been in the theories for 8 years.. The question is why dig it up ( pardon the pun) now
