300 arrested in Mafia crackdown

Major police operation sees results.

ITALIAN POLICE have arrested at least 300 people on suspicion of mafia membership, ANSA reports. Among those arrested was a man considered the head of the Calabrian mafia ‘Ndrangheta gang. Domenico Oppedisano, 80, was allegedly appointed head of the group last August.

Italian police have already captured his alleged second-in-command. Today’s operation involved 3,000 police officers raiding premises across the north of the country as well as Calabria, which lies at the southern tip of Italy. Police also seized assets worth millions of euros.

Italian authorities have been working to crack down on mafia operations. On Saturday, police confiscated land allegedly used by crime bosses in the Casalesi clan. The following day, one of the country’s most notorious wanted criminals was arrested. Elio Amato is suspected of heading a breakaway faction of the notorious Camorra mafia clan.
