5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring the apps that will simplify everything, a solution to your photo woes and a tranquil snowboarding game.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features the apps that will simplify everything, a solution to your photo woes and a tranquil snowboarding game.

Do button by IFTTT
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

- If you’re not familiar with IFTTT, we’d recommend you give it (or Workflow) a look as they’re incredibly handy for automating tasks
- Do button is this taken to its logical conclusion. You create a button that can do three tasks that you can quickly access.
- It’s incredibly slick, and choosing what to use it for is incredibly simple. You need an IFTTT account to use it, but it’s worth it.
- And it just sits there on your home screen for whenever you need it. Simplicity at its finest.
- If you like the idea of this, there’s also Do Camera (iOS, Android) and Do Note (iOS, Android) which offer similar functionality for photos and notes respectively.

WhatsApp Video Optimizer
For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free

- If you’re a heavy WhatsApp user, you probably know the frustration of trying to send videos but being restricted by the 15MB limit.
- WhatsApp Video Optimizer gets past that restriction, allowing you to adjust your videos so they meet the requirement.
- The app is rather straightforward. Select the filetype, the speed you need it adjusted and where you want to access it.
- If there is one criticism, it’s that it is ad heavy, but you probably expected that anyway since you are getting it for free.
- If you want to record HQ video, but were hampered by the size restrictions, then it’s a no brainer.

Ink for iOS
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- By their very nature, apps are simple and to the point. They normally do one function and do it well.
- Ink is a simple but nice app that allows you to jot down notes very quickly.
- It’s much like a notepad allowing you to draw or write notes down using just your finger.
- The part that might annoy some is that you can only try out colours once. You’re stuck with the standard grey if you do.
- Handy for those who have larger-screened iPhones or iPads.

Gallery Doctor – Phone Cleaner
For: Android
Cost: Free

- We can always do with more free space, especially if you’re filling it up with apps and photos (we’re not taking responsibility for the former, ok).
- Gallery Doctor helps you clear out your photo collection and free up some much-needed space.
- It analyses and picks out photos that it deems unnecessary – either by subject or if there are duplicates. For the latter, it picks out the best ones for you.
- It also has a tinder-style delete or keep function to review photos, although you have a moment or two to undo a deleted option if you realised you made a mistake.
- If you have a phone that’s low on space but heavy on photos, then this will clear things up for you.

Alto’s Adventure
For: iOS
Cost: €1.99

- The best way to describe Alto’s adventure is it’s a cross between Monument Valley, Powder, and Tiny Wings. All very good qualities to have.
- Alto’s Adventure has you controlling a snowboarder as you make your way across snowy landscapes.
- You grind bunting, tag lamas (it makes sense in context) and perform tricks, all with one tap.
- If you didn’t notice from the trailer, this is an endless runner, but it’s one that you rarely get frustrated with, even when you mess up. There’s something rather soothing about the game, partly thanks to its simple but eye-catching art design.
- A joyful, relaxing and beautiful game that’s well worth the asking price.
