AIB 'hasn't asked' government to remove salary cap - Kenny
Enda Kenny denies reports that AIB has sought permission for its chief executive to be paid more than the €500,000 cap.
TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY has denied that Allied Irish Banks has asked for permission to breach the salary ceiling imposed on its chief executive.
Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon, and responding to queries from Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, Kenny said no request had been sought for AIB to offer prospective new CEOs a salary of over €500,000 a year.
The request to the Department of Finance had reportedly been made, Adams explained, because the bank claimed it was finding it difficult to attract candidates of an international calibre to the position.
“It is inconceivable that you would countenance such an increase, at a time of huge distress,” Adams said.
Kenny claimed, however, that no such request had been lodged with the Department of Finance.
“What I said was, I would need to see an exceptionally compelling case from any bank coming before the government, with a request to breach this ceiling,” Kenny said.
