BANK OF IRELAND is refunding its ATM users €3 million after customers forgot to remove money from ATM machines before walking away. The machines automatically retract cash and ATM cards if not retrieved by the user within a certain amount of time.
BOI customers affected will be getting €1.3 million back, and 29,000 customers from other banks will be refunded the remainder. The money built up over a four-year period before October 2009 as a result of anti-fraud measures which prevented automatic refunds to accounts when money was left in the machine.
The bank said it notified the Financial Regulator when it became aware of the problem, and will be issuing the refunds as soon as possible. BOI customers should be getting their money back by the end of this week.
Askaboutmoney.com said that they wouldn’t have thought people would need advice on taking their money, but recommended people take more care when using ATMs.
