• The government has postponed the decision on whether Irish should be a mandatory subject for the Leaving Certificate until 2012 at the earliest.

• Gardaí are investigating the possibility of a dissident republican link involved in the fatal shooting of a 53-year-old man in Clondalkin, Dublin, yesterday.
• The owner of the Rostrevor House nursing home Sarah Lipsett has the allegations that one of the carers at the home abused residents were “absolutely unfounded”. Her comments came as the Circuit Court rejected an application challenging aspects of the District Court ruling last week, which handed control of the facility to the HSE.
• Kate Middleton and the former British Prime Minster Tony Blair are among the names now being linked to the News International phone hacking scandal, following allegations that public figures had their bank account details accessed by a private investigator hired by the newsgroup.

• French prosecutors are probing allegations that a former top French politician was caught having an “orgy with small boys” in Marrakech.
• The High Court has granted an order to the Minister for Finance directing Irish Life & Permanent to sell its life assurance business.
• The ECB has not raised its key interest rate this month – but might do so in July. Speaking today, ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet warned the bank and the Eurozone nations needed to exercise “strong vigilance”.
• David Cameron has made an historic address to the Northern Ireland Assembly in Stormont, in which he spoke of the “historic linkages and deep bonds” between Britain and Ireland.
• More than 1,000 Syrian refugees fled to Turkey last night over fears that the government is planning a major retaliation attack for the recent death of 120 security troops.
• Ireland is going to see a population boom of 46 per cent in the next 50 years according to the EU’s statistics office.
• The ‘Naked Adventurer’, Irishman Keith Whelan, has been forced to give up his attempt to become the youngest man to row solo across the Indian Ocean due to health concerns and damage to his boat.
• Alec Baldwin is considering running for mayor of New York, in the wake of ‘Weinergate’ - the controversy surrounding previous mayoral favourite Anthony Weiner and his explicit Twitter pictures.
