He first entered politics in 1981 when he was elected as a senator for Trinity College. He was re-elected nine times and served until 2011 when he successfully challenged for a Dáil seat. He is the co-founder of the Independent Alliance grouping of politicians and is a former business editor of the Sunday Independent.
