He ran for local office on a number of occasions before being elected to Leitrim County Council in 2014. He also ran in a 2014 by-election but failed to secure a seat. He has campaigned strongly against the repealing of the 8th Amendment to the Constitution which grants an equal right to life for both a mother and an unborn child.
