Outgoing Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness is seeking election for a fourth term as a representative of Carlow-Kilkenny. McGuinness has been active in local politics since his election to Kilkenny Corporation in 1979 and has been a member of Kilkenny County Council since 1991. He was first elected to Dáil Eireann in 1997. In the 2007 general election, he was returned on the first count and was appointed as Minister for Trade and Commerce soon afterwards.



 

Did you know?

When McGuinness was elected as Mayor of Kilkenny in 1996, he became the third generation of his family to hold the office. His great-uncle, John, was Mayor eight times and his father, Michael, was Mayor on seven occasions.
