The 2011 election is Michael McCarthy's third attempt to win a Dáil seat in Cork South-West for the Labour Party. The 34-year-old was first elected to the Seanad's Labour Panel in 2002, and following his unsuccessful general eelction campaign in 2007, maanged to secure reelection as a senator. He is currently the Labour Party's spokesperson on the marine.
