Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuiv is seeking his fifth term as TD for Galway West. Formerly a manager of a Gaeltacht co-operative, Ó Cuiv was first elected to the Dáil in 1992. He was Minister for Gaeltacht, Rural and Community Affairs for almost eight years from 2002 to 2010. Ó Cuiv was briefly appointed as Minister for Defence by Taoiseach Brian Cowen following the resignation of Tony Killeen in January 2011.

Did you know?

Ó Cuiv finished runner-up in the race for the Fianna Fáil leadership in January 2011. He is the grandson of the founder of Fianna Fail Eamon de Valera.
